1. Start with three clear destinations
Choose three familiar places or objects. This trail goes from DESK to BOOK to MAP: give the learner the first card, put the second on the labeled desk, and hide the third inside the chosen book. Leave a note at the map to finish the activity.
Label the intended desk and book if there are several to choose from. The cipher should be the challenge, not finding which identical object you meant. Keep the stops accessible, or use three labeled envelopes at one table if you prefer to stay seated.
2. Give every clue the rule it needs
Give the Caesar card its shift of 3, the Atbash card a reversed A–Z chart, and the Polybius card the row-first I/J square. Each answer is one word, so the Polybius clue does not need to preserve spaces.
| Card | Method and convention | Ciphertext | Prepared answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Caesar; shift 3; A = 0 | GHVN | DESK |
| 2 | Atbash; reversed A–Z | YLLP | BOOK |
| 3 | Polybius; I/J square; row then column | 32 11 35 | MAP |
For guided practice, provide the method and rule instead of asking learners simply to “break the code.” Later, you can make identifying the method part of the challenge. Say so in the instructions and keep the complete rules on your own copy.
3. Check the answers before printing
Decode all three clues with the stated settings before printing them. Keep the answers separate from the learner cards and check every letter, even when a familiar word seems obvious.
Check DESK with Caesar shift 3
DESKEncode; shift 3; preserve nonlettersGHVN| Check | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Caesar first letter | G = 6; 6 − 3 = 3 | D |
| Atbash repeated letters | Both L letters map to O | BOOK |
| Polybius coordinates | 32 = M; 11 = A; 35 = P | MAP |
Encode DESK with shift 3 to check GHVN. Apply Atbash to BOOK to get YLLP back. For MAP, use the exact Polybius square to check each coordinate. Avoid swapping in the Tap Code chart, which uses a different merged-letter rule.
Try the full route once with the answer sheet hidden. A clue can be correct but placed at the wrong stop. If you change a destination, encode the new word and check that card again rather than editing its ciphertext by eye.
4. Print the clue cards
- Give each card its number, method, rule, ciphertext, and a short instruction.
- Keep the answer line DESK · BOOK · MAP on the teacher copy.
- Check a grayscale print so color is not needed to read a token or grid label.
- Leave space for the learner to write the decoded word and one checked letter.
- Print the full Polybius reference with the coordinate card.
For a first attempt, let learners share the charts and solve together. Later, ask them to complete part of a chart before reading a similar clue. The Caesar beginner worksheet offers more known-shift practice; its seed selects a separate set rather than changing these three destinations.
