These Caesar puzzles give you the shift so you can concentrate on decoding. Practice moving backward through the alphabet, wrapping from A to Z, and checking the result. Generated questions use beginner-friendly shifts such as 1, 3, and 5.
What to do
- Read the supplied shift and confirm that the task is Decode.
- Move each letter backward by that many positions.
- Keep word spaces and punctuation where the question preserves them.
- Check the answer by encoding it with the same shift.
Sample question
READ THE MAPThe printed clue is UHDG WKH PDS; decode with shift 3UHDG WKH PDSThe learner’s sheet shows the encoded clue and a blank answer line. The answer is READ THE MAP. To explain the first letter, use U = 20 and subtract the shift: 20 − 3 = 17, or R.
Watch the alphabet boundary
A letter near the beginning may wrap to the end while decoding. For shift 3, A becomes X. An alphabet strip can help a beginner track that wrap without changing the rule.
A quick extra question
Decode FKHFN using shift 3.
Use the answer key as a check
Ask learners to show one straightforward letter shift and one that wraps around the alphabet. This makes their method easier to discuss than an answer alone. Leave out the separate answer pages when handing out the questions.
Save a set for your next lesson
Pick a question count and seed, then generate your Caesar worksheet. The same seed, worksheet type, count, and generator version will recreate it later. Choose A4 or Letter for printing. You can include the answer key on separate pages or download the questions without it.
